On International Day of Forests (21 March), we raise awareness about the vital role forests play in ecological balance and climate regulation by promoting afforestation, reforestation, and sustainable forest management to ensure forests continue to thrive for future generations. Pro Carton members lead the way in climate action by promoting sustainable forest management.
According to the results of the Pro Carton European Packaging Perceptions Survey 2025, 61% of European consumers responded that they value planting more trees as an important practice to combat climate change, and it is only recycling that is attributed as a more effective method.
Forests are essential to maintain a liveable climate as trees help lower carbon emissions, minimise the greenhouse effect, and act as natural air purifiers, playing a vital role in sustaining life and improving environmental health. Through sustainable forest management, European forests are growing and the EU Forest Strategy pledges to contribute to this by planting three billion additional trees by 2030. According to Eurostat data, in 2023, 39% of the European Union is covered with forests, compared to 31% globally. With sustainable management practices, forests can be guaranteed for future generations whilst balancing industry demands with environmental needs.
Cartonboard packaging is derived from biotic wood fibres and is a renewable resource, and we are proud that the Pro Carton members strictly support principles of sustainable forest management, with the industry responsible for 20% absorption of EU greenhouse gases. The wood fibres used in our packaging materials can be recycled over 25 times, emphasising the regenerative potential of trees within a circular economy and our sustainable contributions to the packaging industry.
International Day of Forests serves as a vital reminder of the importance of trees and forests in improving environmental health and securing a better future climate. As an industry, we share a collective responsibility to contribute positively to the planet.
